Reasons to Adopt a Child

3 Common Myths Debunked About Adopting From Foster Care And Reasons To Adopt A Child

The reasons to adopt a child are many, and they are all important. Whatever your own reasons may be, they are meaningful to you and provide all the motivation you need to go through the process. Unfortunately, the option of adopting out of foster care is sometimes overlooked, often for reasons that are nothing more than myths.

Myth: These Are Problem Children

Simply put, this is false. Children wind up in the foster care system because of the actions of others, not their own mistakes. It is commonly as a result of abuse or neglect that a child will end up in foster care. If one of your reasons to adopt a child is to help that child wind up in the kind of loving family they deserve, adopting from foster care is the perfect opportunity to do just that.

Myth: It’s a Temporary Adoption

Again, this is not true. Once a foster child has been declared free for adoption and the process is completed, that adoption is permanent just like any other type of option. One of the commonly held reasons to adopt a child is to grow your family and adopting from the foster system can permit you to do just that. Not all foster children will wind up in an adoption situation, but those who do are not going to be ‘returned’ once the process is finished.

Myth: The System is Too Complex

With any kind of adoption, there is going to be a lot of paperwork, waiting, and a bit of frustration along the way. Those are common experiences, but your reasons to adopt a child should be stronger than any minor inconveniences. Don’t let horror stories put you off of this idea, as everyone involved will work hard to bring the process to a satisfactory conclusion in the best interest of the child.
