Resources That Help After You Foster Adopt in Siskiyou County

BETH RANKIN | DAILY KENT STATER Marisa Beagle, a history major, and her daughter, Noelle, sit in the parking lot of the Salem Campus, where she attends school 45 minutes away from her home in East Palestine, near the Pennsylvania border. Marisa and Noelle, 18 months, live with Marisa's parents. A single parent, Beagle says it's tough to attend school and raise a daughter simultaneously, but with the support of her family, she's able to make it work.

If you’ve elected to foster adopt in Siskiyou County, we’re sure it was no small decision and probably not a short process either. Now that the adoption has been finalized, you may be wondering what’s next. Thankfully, there are some excellent resources to help you through this next phase.

Post-Adoption Support Services

Many foster children suffer abuse, neglect, or trauma. Teens may go through an identity crisis. Members of the family may need to process the adjustment of adoption. Both you and the child will benefit from supportive networks–whether the need is for recovery from trauma or just additional support while you transition into a new family unit. Support services can include support groups, counseling, retreats or social events, respite care, educational resources, and parenting training.

Respite Care

Sometimes parents need a break, especially if they have children who require lots of their time and energy. Respite care is provided by a trained provider who is carefully selected and who is usually able to provide more advanced care than a babysitter would be able to. Foster programs often require a provider to be licensed. Parents can request regularly scheduled respite or respite on an as-needed basis. It can take place in the child’s home or in the home of the provider. Respite care is highly recommended, as it gives both parents and children an opportunity to refresh.

Financial Aid

Since you’ve decided to foster adopt your child should receive medical and dental coverage. Additionally, you may be eligible for financial aid until the child is 18 or 22. If the child has special needs (a broad term that covers many foster children), you may be eligible to receive increased financial aid. Check the programs available in your state. You can also apply for adoption grants.

College Aid

If you adopt a child who is age 13 or older, they will be considered an independent student on the FAFSA, which means they won’t need to report family income and will likely qualify for financial aid. If a child is adopted at age 16 or older, they may be able to receive an Education and Training Voucher for up to $5,000 per year. Some states also offer college tuition waivers or scholarship programs for adopted children.

Tax Credits

You have the opportunity to take advantage of the Federal Adoption Tax Credit in the year the expenses occurred. With this credit, you’re able to apply for a credit for up to $13,400 of adoption expenses, as of 2015. This includes all expenses related to the adoptive process, including court costs, adoption fees, attorney fees, and travel expenses. If you received adoption benefits from your employer, you’re also able to claim the exclusion for employer-provided adoption assistance, which means that those benefits are not taxable.

When you foster adopt in Siskiyou County, you can rest assured that you will not be left on your own after the adoption.
